In January 2014 the first killings occurred during a protest against the Dictatorial Laws that were passed by the Ukrainian Parliament.

The EuroMaidan protests were kicked off on Nov. 30, 2013 when former President Viktor Yanukovych failed to sign an association agreement with the European Union. The protest was turned into a tent camp and in December 2013 a Revolution. In January 2014 the first killings occurred during a protest against the "Dictatorial Laws" that were passed by the Ukrainian Parliament. Protesters Serhiy Nigoyan and Mikhail Zhyznewski were shot dead by police during this protest rally. These were the first deaths of the Maidan Revolution.
