Thousands of people have marched in Moscow on February 29 to commemorate oppositionist Boris Nemtsov who was killed five years ago.

The march started at 2 p.m. local time but participants gathered one hour earlier in order to get through security gates.

The aim of the event is to "demand the change of power in Russia and to stand against usurpation," reads the Facebook event page.

According to Russia's independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, the gathering attracted around 10,000 people. It was sanctioned by the Russian authorities. However, the police has prepared a number of special vehicles that are used to transport detainees that were located around the perimeter of the march since early morning.

The participants chanted "No to political murders," "Freedom to political prisoners," "Fight for Constitution."

Boris Nemtsov was shot dead on February 27, 2015. A Moscow court ruled Chechen soldier Zaur Dadaev guilty of the murder, along with four other suspects. They were sentenced to 20 years in prison. All five men claim to be innocent.

Dadaev served in "Sever" ("North") battalion, which belongs to the military forces of the infamous Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.

Many Russian oppositionists believe that Kadyrov himself ordered the murder but the investigators have not given this version any credit.
