The Servant of the People TV series with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the lead role is among the top three most popular foreign series in Russian online cinema, the Russian newspaper Kommersant reported. The series aired in the lead up to the 2019 Ukrainian presidential elections where Zelenskyy, who played a fictional president of Ukraine Vasyl Holoborodko in the series, gained a landslide victory.
According to the statistics by the Okko online cinema, in the first half of 2019, the eighth season of Game of Thrones produced by the American HBO channel got the most views. The Chernobyl miniseries of joint production by HBO and British Sky Atlantic took the second place. And the third season of the Servant of the People series by Kvartal 95 studio, formerly co-owned by Zelenskyy himself, closes the top three most popular foreign series among Okko subscribers.
The three TV series combined were watched 8 million times.
In May 2019, Yandex acquired the screening rights for the Servant of the People series in Russia. Since then, Russian citizens can watch the series in online cinemas Megogo and Okko by subscription. The third and final season of the Servant of the People series was released on March 27, 2019, just weeks before the elections.
