“The Kerch Prisoners”: The Story of 24 Captured Ukrainian Sailors

On November 25, 2018, near the Kerch Strait in the Black Sea, Russian troops opened fire on Ukrainian boats and captured 24 crew members. For more than nine months, Ukrainians have been detained in Russian prisons without being recognized as prisoners of war.

For more than nine months, Ukrainians have been detained in Russian prisons without being recognized as prisoners of war. Despite the obligation of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to release the military immediately, Russia has not complied with this decision.

We talked to our sailors' relatives, went to Russian court hearings, and spoke with Ukrainian lawyers, military, prisoners of war. After that, we reconstructed the seizure of sailors and ships, and summed it up in a great story.
