Valerii Honta, a Ukrainian service member who participated in the defense of Donetsk International Airport during the war in eastern Ukraine in 2014, died on the frontline in Donbas in May 2022, reported Oleksii, a medic of the 14th brigade where Valerii served.

A shell hit the Bakhmut-Lysychansk highway, where active fighting is going on. Valerii Honta died on the spot within minutes.

Honta joined the military service in 2014 — he volunteered for the war in Donbas. The recruitment office did not accept his candidacy due to his health condition — as a child, Valerii suffered from bronchial asthma. Then he joined Right Sector, and in July 2014, he went to the front.
He participated in the battles for Pisky in Donetsk Oblast and the Donetsk Airport. He spent a month at the control tower and was contacted and threatened by a Motorola militant. Arsen Pavlov (call-sign Motorola) commanded a rebel battalion that participated in major offensives against Ukrainian forces at Donetsk airport and Ilovaisk. He died in 2016 due to a bomb blast in the elevator of his apartment building in  Donetsk.

After the battle for the airport, Honta signed a contract and joined the 1st Battalion of the 54th Brigade. Then he took part in the Battle of Svitlodarsk in Donetsk Oblast. During the battle, he removed the wounded soldier from the battlefield under artillery fire.
At the end of 2016, he returned home: without serious injuries but with a severe contusion. He had hearing problems and continued treatment. When the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine began, Valerii Honta returned to the service and joined the 14th Brigade.
