Clearing of Lyman from Russians, civilians trip mines: highlights of the day

The Ukrainian military cleared Lyman in Donetsk Oblast from the occupying Russian troops, and in several liberated regions civilians tripped mines. Here is our selection of the main news from today.

Clearing of Lyman

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that as of 12:30 p.m., Lyman, Donetsk Oblast, had been completely cleared of the occupying military.

Russia used Lyman as a logistics and transport hub for its operations in the north of Donetsk Oblast. The capture of the city is Ukraine's biggest success on the battlefield since the liberation of Kharkiv Oblast in September.

Western reaction

The Pentagon called the liberation of Lyman in Donetsk Oblast by the Ukrainian Armed Forces an encouraging success that will cause trouble for the Russians. "Absolutely, it's significant. We're very encouraged by what we're seeing right now," said U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the liberation of Lyman confirms that Ukrainians are making progress and can liberate their territories.

Tripping mines

During the day, civilians were injured by mines in several de-occupied regions. In the morning a car of "Ukrtelecom" employees tripped a mine in Sumy Oblast. The driver died on the spot, two people were hospitalized. Also a car with civilians hit a mine in the woods near the village of Shestovytsia, Chernihiv Oblast. All four people died.

In Kharkiv Oblast an ambulance tripped a mine while on its way to a call. The driver was killed and the paramedic was injured. In addition, five bodies were found in a field in Vasylenkove village, Kharkiv Oblast, on October 2. They wanted to evacuate on their own by car, but tripped Russian mines.

Assistance to Ukraine

Bloomberg citing sources reported that the United States is ready to allocate $1.5 billion per month to support Ukraine during the war. The same is expected from European partners, but the EU is still trying to fulfill previous commitments.

And Denmark announced that Germany, Denmark and Norway will buy 16 Slovak Zuzana-2 howitzers for Ukraine. In total, 685 million Danish kroner (or $90.3 million) will be allocated to Slovakia for the production of the guns.

Also, the leaders of nine countries of Central and Eastern Europe called on all NATO members to "significantly increase" military assistance to Ukraine. They stressed that they support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and will never recognize Russia's attempts to annex any Ukrainian lands.

Annexation of Ukrainian lands

The Constitutional Court of Russia approved the so-called agreements on "accession into the Russian Federation" of the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. They want to introduce the Russian language as the "state language" and to extend the mandate of their armed forces. Russia wants to introduce a transition period for "integration into the economic, financial, credit and legal systems of the Russian Federation", as well as into the "system of state authorities of the Russian Federation" until January 1, 2026.

Further, the so-called "accession to the Russian Federation" must be approved by the chambers of the Russian parliament (the Federation Council and the State Duma) and finally approved by Vladimir Putin. He has already submitted the relevant bills to the State Duma.

Shelling of Mykolaiv

On the night of October 2, Russian troops launched a missile attack on a residential area of Mykolaiv. Seven people were injured. The occupiers fired missiles from the S-300 system.

At least four apartment buildings were damaged. In particular, there were hits near two four-storey buildings. A fire broke out in two apartments of one of the buildings, it has already been eliminated.

Losses of the Russian military

Ukrainian military killed 60,110 Russian soldiers during the full-scale war, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said. On October 1 alone, Russia lost 500 of its troops.

Also on October 1, the Russian army lost 23 tanks, 26 armored combat vehicles, 8 artillery systems and other equipment.
