Sasha Maslov’s “Veterans” is a series of portraits and short interviews that depicts WWII veterans from across the world in their current environments. The Ukrainian-born photographer and history buff says that this project provided him with insight on how the Second World War is perceived in different parts of the world.
Over the last five years, Maslov traveled to over 22 countries and photographed over 100 veterans. “Veterans are people who experienced war very heavily for themselves”, says Maslov about his collection which includes both men and women affected by the Second World War.
Maslov believes it hard to generalize what he learned from this project, but each person taught him something specific: “I learned the ability to analyze and think what would have happened with my opinions over the year with grudges.”
Hromadske’s Ian Bateson and Nataliya Gumenyuk spoke to Sasha Maslov, independent photographer during a live broadcast of The Sunday Show on February 14th, 2016 in Kyiv.
