Ukraine's Road To NATO

What You Need To Know:

✓ Tusk should take leadership on the issue of Ukraine for the European Union;
✓ Consensus to defend Ukraine doesn't exist;
✓ NATO ascension isn't possible right now for Ukraine.

Wolfgang Ischinger, Chairman,  Munich Security Conference says that Donald Tusk, the current President of the European Council,  must be the one who takes leadership on integrating Ukraine into the European Union. On the topic of Ukrainian ascension to NATO, he says it is a 'very difficult question' because there 'might not be an easy way into NATO.'
The reasoning right now he says is because Ukraine is not jointly united in wanting to join NATO, and furthermore, the members of NATO are not willing to defend Ukraine in case of conflict. "We had a very hard time agreeing to defend Poland" he says, and adds that "I can tell you that right now there will not be consensus on defending Ukraine."
