'We Don't Want East Ukraine to Look Like Afghanistan'

Weapons would certainly help boost Ukrainian military efforts, but they would not get rid of the systematic problems in Ukraine's fighting forces, said Michael Kofman, a public policy scholar at the Wilson Center in Washington D.C.

Weapons would certainly help boost Ukrainian military efforts, but they would not get rid of the systematic problems in Ukraine's fighting forces, said Michael Kofman, a public policy scholar at the Wilson Center in Washington D.C. who is opposed to the West sending lethal aid to Ukraine.

Kofman goes on to say that it's unclear what the Russian response would be to an influx of military aid from western powers. A worst case scenario: the battle for Ukraine could turn into another Afghanistan, Kofman said.

Michael Kofman, a public policy scholar and military expert, spoke with Hromadske International's Ian Bateson and Angelina Kariakina on Feb. 8, 2015.
