Breaking Down Brutal Info Warfare Between Russia & Ukraine

Covering the Ukrainian crisis is one of the biggest challenges for modern journalism.

What You Need To Know:

✔ Citizen journalism in East  Ukraine dies out as the war keeps ruining local infrastructure;
✔ Fear of being persecuted keeps Eastern Ukrainian people silent, or forces them lie;
✔ Western media don’t pay enough  attention to reforms in Ukraine, many negative/positive stories, but no real  stories.

Covering the Ukrainian crisis is one of the biggest challenges for modern journalism. Considering the level of intense propaganda, distortion  of facts and news manipulation by multiple sides of the conflict, the process  of information verifying is extremely time-consuming, James Miller of The Interpreter points out.

As world’s media attention moves away from Ukraine, many  foreign newsrooms fail in covering important developments in Ukraine, like true  pace of reforms: ‘There are many positive stories and negative stories, but not  real stories,’ Miller says.

Hromadske International’s Maxim Eristavi spoke to James Miller, a managing editor at The Interpreter during the YES international  conference in Kyiv on September 11th, 2015.
